The asbestos struggle is still not over

During the more than 30 years from 1952 to 1986, Etnett successively opened four factories for the production of asbestos products such as roofing materials and pipes in the Pyrmont area in northern Italy and the Sicily in the south. Ten thousand workers work here.

At that time, the damage to asbestos in Europe remained at the level of academic discussion. There were not many concepts from government to civil society. The Italian government did not strictly regulate the production process of related products. At the top of the Etitite, the hole was drilled and the workers processed the asbestos material without any protective measures. They did not give any warnings when selling large quantities of products to surrounding towns for laying streets, courtyards or for roof insulation.

As the symptoms of asbestos damage often do not appear until 20 years later, some even have to be 40 years, employees and surrounding residents did not notice at first. Until the late 1970s, cancer patients began to appear intensively, and news about asbestos carcinogenesis was circulating among workers. After the 1980s, the company was under pressure to shut down all the factories in Italy.

In view of the dangers of asbestos to the human body, Italy completely banned the use of asbestos in 1994, after Italy was one of the most important asbestos producers and consumers in Europe. Europe announced a total ban on asbestos in 2005.

Many people think that the perpetrators did not receive the punishment they deserved - only four Ettnet managers were sentenced to three and a half years in short sentences in 1993. The real culprit, Ettnet, was never imprisoned. . So far, Smidhene and Malkien have always denied that they are guilty. They argue that they do not directly manage factories in Italy and only agree to give certain economic compensation.

Last year, the Turin High Law ruled that the two defendants paid compensation ranging from 4 million to 25 million euros (about 32.76 million yuan to 200 million yuan) in the city where the factory is located, and more than 6,000 victims will receive an average of 30,000 euros ( About 246,000 yuan). However, due to the constant appeal of Smidhene and Malkienni, it is unknown when the money can be given and how much it can be given. Earlier in October 2011, Etnett only agreed to compensate its employees in an asbestos factory in Sicily for about 9 million euros (73.71 million yuan), but this is far from the requirements of the victims.

The Italian Minister of Health also said that "the battle with asbestos has not ended." The asbestos problem is not only a local and national issue, but also an international issue.
